Cataloguer, Hong Kong Copyright Material Cataloguing Project
|Salary:||£23,250 per annum (£13,950 pro rata)|
|Job Type:||Fixed Term Contract|
|Category:||Collection Care, Curation & Conservation|
Part Time (0.6 FTE, 3 days per week), Fixed Term for 12 months
The British Library’s Chinese collections comprise more than 120,000 items, ranging from 3,000-year-old oracle bones to contemporary material. A number of activities are currently underway to enhance the online discoverability of these important holdings. One of these is a project to sort and process a large quantity of modern Chinese language material published in Hong Kong prior to 1997.
This challenging role will involve working with the Serials team in Boston Spa, curators in the East Asian Collections in London, and other colleagues across the British Library. The postholder will be responsible for setting and monitoring targets for the project, and for sorting and listing the material to facilitate subsequent cataloguing. Liaison with conservation, storage, stamping, and other collection management teams, will be an essential part of this role, as will the ability to work across a range of material types.
The successful candidate will have an excellent knowledge of written Chinese (in non-simplified characters) and the ability to transliterate accurately into pinyin Romanisation. You will have a flexible approach to problem-solving and be able to manage your time effectively, while ensuring that the project is planned and delivered against strict deadlines. Familiarity with British Library cataloguing standards and practice, including RDA and Aleph, and experience of working with library collections would be an advantage.
As one of the world’s great libraries, our duty is to preserve the nation’s intellectual memory for the future. At present we have well over 150 million items, in most known languages, with three million new items added every year. We have manuscripts, maps, newspapers, magazines, prints and drawings, music scores, and patents. We operate the world’s largest document delivery service providing millions of items a year to customers all over the world. What matters to us is that we preserve the national memory and enable knowledge to be created both now and in the future.
In return we offer a competitive salary and a number of excellent benefits. Our pension scheme is one of the most valuable benefits we offer, as our staff can become members of the Alpha Pension Scheme where the Library contributes 20.9%. Another significant benefit the Library provides is the provision of a flexible working hours scheme which could allow you to work your hours flexibly over the week and to take up to 5 days flexi leave in a 3 month period. This is on top of 25 days holiday from entry and public and privilege holidays.
