Description

Part Time (2.5 days per week), Fixed Term for 1 year

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a South Indian Languages Cataloguer to join and work with specialist curators in the South Asia section of the Asian and African Collections department. The role involves working in particular with material relating to South Asia in one or more of the following South Indian languages: Malayalam, Kannada and Telugu.

The post-holder will work closely with the South Indian Language Collections Curator and assist them in cataloguing books and serials, processing and cataloguing material currently stored on shelving in office areas at the Library’s St Pancras site, sorting and deduplication of items, and the selection of items for the Library’s collection. The post-holder will also assist with reader enquiries relating to the South Indian language collections.

The post-holder will have degree-level knowledge of one or more of the following South Indian languages: Malayalam, Kannada and Telugu.

Knowledge of other South Indian languages would be desirable (particularly useful would be Arwi (Arabi-Tamil), Arabi-Malayalam, Tamil, Sinhalese). Further to these languages, knowledge of other modern South Asian languages would also be useful and a familiarity with cataloguing standards and practice would be desirable.

The successful candidate for the role will be able to transliterate South Indian scripts with complete accuracy to Library of Congress and British Library standards, and to use their knowledge of the cultural history of South Asia to apply subject headings. It would be an advantage to have had experience of work in a research library, academic or other relevant environment, or to have had experience of cataloguing library collections.

As one of the world’s great libraries, our duty is to preserve the nation’s intellectual memory for the future. At present we have well over 150 million items, in most known languages, with three million new items added every year. We have manuscripts, maps, newspapers, magazines, prints and drawings, music scores, and patents. We operate the world’s largest document delivery service providing millions of items a year to customers all over the world. What matters to us is that we preserve the national memory and enable knowledge to be created both now and in the future.

In return we offer a competitive salary and a number of excellent benefits.  Our pension scheme is one of the most valuable benefits we offer, as our staff can become members of the Alpha Pension Scheme where the Library contributes 20.9%. Another significant benefit the Library provides is the provision of a flexible working hours scheme which could allow you to work your hours flexibly over the week and to take up to 5 days flexi leave in a 3 month period. This is on top of 25 days holiday from entry and public and privilege holidays.
