Working with one of the largest, richest and most diverse research collections in the world, you’ll use your degree in conservation or equivalent experience and high levels of manual dexterity, on a wide range of selected items from the Library’s collections.

You will be guided by conservation professional ethics and the principles of minimal intervention in the conservation of books to carry out conservation treatments on a wide range of paper based collection items.

You will be part of a new, minor treatments, remedial conservation team that will provide the collections and various stakeholders with a fast-tracked option for board re-attachment, re-backing, the insertion of loose folios and in-situ paper repairs in order to improve the longevity, stability and accessibility of these items.

Operating with minimal supervision, you’ll also demonstrate your ability to plan and manage your work to ensure that production deadlines are met and provide clear, detailed and accurate records of all treatments undertaken in accordance with professional conservation standards and frameworks.

The role has a small percentage of the time dedicated to evaluating a range of book collection items and provide recommendation or referrals to; the scheduled work programmes of the larger in-house conservation teams, or external conservation and binding providers.

In return we offer a competitive salary and a number of excellent benefits.  Our pension scheme is one of the most valuable benefits we offer, as our staff can become members of the Alpha Pension Scheme where the Library contributes 20.9%. Another significant benefit the Library provides is the provision of a flexible working hour’s scheme which could allow you to work your hours flexibly over the week and to take up to 5 days flexi leave in a 3 month period. This is on top of 25 days holiday from entry and public and privilege holidays.

As one of the world’s great libraries, our duty is to preserve the nation’s intellectual memory for the future. At present we have well over 150 million items, in most known languages, with three million new items added every year. We have manuscripts, maps, newspapers, magazines, prints and drawings, music scores, and patents. We operate the world’s largest document delivery service providing millions of items a year to customers all over the world. What matters to us is that we preserve the national memory and enable knowledge to be created both now and in the future.
