The Library is seeking to recruit a Conservator to join the growing Collection Care North team.  In this role you will support the overall collection care programme of work on collections at Boston Spa, which may include:

  • Supporting digitisation projects, preparing collection items for digitisation
  • Conservation assessment and treatment of the collection
  • Pre-acquisition, quarantine and environmental monitoring / management activities
  • Participating in delivering engagement and training opportunities in conservation to colleagues

The successful candidate will need to demonstrate:

  • Recent and extensive practical experience in conservation and preservation/preventive conservation.
  • Good accuracy, organisation and problem solving skills
  • Proficiency in processes of examination, assessment, documentation and preventive and interventive conservation.
  • A thorough understanding of the ethics of conservation and of the materials science relating to conservation including the relationship between materials and their environment.
  • Ability to work constructively within a team displaying A broad knowledge of available conservation treatments and preventive conservation issues across a range of disciplines, with specialist skills and knowledge within the field of paper and/or book conservation.

  • Ability to work on own initiative in the absence of the line manager and to handle a varied work load with key performance targets

Work within both the collection storage areas and Collection Care North may be physically demanding requiring manual handling and working across the site in different storage areas. Full training will be given in all aspects of collection care, especially handling of material; health and safety and manual handling training; bibliographic searching and automated systems.
