The British Library is seeking to appoint a Discovery Services Lead to lead on the development of the Library’s strategy for discovery and access services and coordinate its implementation across the organisation. The post holder will be responsible for shaping and delivering the resource discovery and access infrastructure within the Everything Available change management portfolio, a key strand in the Library’s Living Knowledge strategy. The post presents an exciting opportunity to implement innovative resource discovery services across and beyond the Library’s collections that includes enabling access to a diverse range of content, interoperability with external environments and the prototyping of advanced discovery methods such as text and data mining, semantic search and visualisation.
The ideal candidate will have in-depth knowledge and experience of discovery tools, search engines, delivery mechanisms and the technologies that underpin them, as well as understand how they can be exploited in support of research. An understanding of the needs of researchers in respect of their use of discovery tools and evolving trends in metadata, bibliographic description and research data organisation – especially with regard to libraries – is essential. The successful applicant must be able to assess technologies and their potential for, and impact on, strategy, systems planning and users, ideally gained in an information service/discovery environment. The ability to work collaboratively and constructively in a matrix environment, including strong communication and influencing skills, will be key to ensuring the post delivers as expected.
