The British Library is a national treasure. Home to 3,000 years of history, its collections (containing everything from manuscripts to music scores and prints to patents) are an infinitely valuable resource used by 16,000 people a day. Not surprisingly, keeping our staff, visitors and collections safe is of paramount importance to us. The library is a busy, vibrant and interesting environment to work in. And if your skills match the ones we’re looking for, you could soon be enjoying it first-hand.

As part of a uniformed security team, you’ll help to provide a secure environment for people working in or visiting our St. Pancras site by helping to provide a 24/7 security operation. You’ll be expected to monitor our CCTV and emergency alarm systems effectively and provide an emergency response to incidents in our public areas, offices and basements.

Holding valid SIA licences (CCTV Public Spaces and Door Supervisor), you’ll also have experience in a similar security control room environment. You’ll also be able to deal with others patiently and fairly, work flexibly as part of a team, have great written and verbal communication skills and be able to apply common sense in any situation.

You’ll also be able to demonstrate your reliability, attention to detail, a good level of health and fitness and the ability to make tough decisions whilst under pressure. Previous experience in a similar role and good IT skills would also be of advantage.

In return we offer a competitive salary and a number of excellent benefits.  Our pension scheme is one of the most valuable benefits we offer, as our staff can become members of the Alpha Pension Scheme where the Library contributes 20.9%. Another significant benefit the Library provides is the provision of a flexible working hours scheme which could allow you to work your hours flexibly over the week and to take up to 5 days flexi leave in a 3 month period. This is on top of 25 days holiday from entry and public and privilege holidays.

More about the British Library

As one of the world’s great libraries, our duty is to preserve the nation’s intellectual memory for the future. At the moment we have well over 150 million items, in most known languages, with three million new items added every year. We have manuscripts, maps, newspapers, magazines, prints and drawings, music scores, and patents. We operate the world’s largest document delivery service providing millions of items a year to customers all over the world. What matters to us is that we preserve the national memory and enable knowledge to be created both now and in the future.
